{"id":446,"date":"2023-02-11T00:18:59","date_gmt":"2023-02-11T00:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edenreports.com\/?p=446"},"modified":"2023-02-11T00:18:59","modified_gmt":"2023-02-11T00:18:59","slug":"seattle-morgues-running-out-of-room-as-fentanyl-related-deaths-skyrocket-after-city-decriminalizes-drug-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edenreports.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/11\/seattle-morgues-running-out-of-room-as-fentanyl-related-deaths-skyrocket-after-city-decriminalizes-drug-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Seattle Morgues Running Out of Room as Fentanyl-Related Deaths Skyrocket After City Decriminalizes Drug Use"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Washington decriminalized drug use and possession following a ruling by the state Supreme Court that declared the state&#8217;s felony possession law unconstitutional in the landmark case known as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doh.wa.gov\/licenses-permits-and-certificates\/professions-new-renew-or-update\/blake-supreme-court-decision\">Blake Decision<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the decision, King County, Washington experienced an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/majority-of-deaths-among-seattle-homeless-population-due-to-fentanyl-overdose\">unprecedented rise<\/a>&nbsp;in fentanyl overdose fatalities, leading to a shortage of storage space for the deceased, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-morgues-overwhelmed-with-dead-bodies-due-to-fentanyl-overdoses\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;by the local medical examiner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a recent meeting of the Board of Health, Dr. Faisal Khan, the Director of Seattle-King County Public Health, shared his thoughts and insights on the matter,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-morgues-overwhelmed-with-dead-bodies-due-to-fentanyl-overdoses\">saying<\/a>, \u201cThe Medical Examiner\u2019s Office is now struggling with the issue of storing bodies because the fentanyl-related death toll continues to climb. Obviously, they have finite space in the coolers they use and that space is now being exceeded on a regular basis.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of January 22, 2023, King County has already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-morgues-overwhelmed-with-dead-bodies-due-to-fentanyl-overdoses\">recorded<\/a>&nbsp;31 fatal fentanyl overdoses. In 2022, it documented&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kingcounty.gov\/depts\/health\/overdose-prevention\/data.aspx\">1,019<\/a>&nbsp;overdose fatalities, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kingcounty.gov\/depts\/health\/overdose-prevention\/data.aspx\">highest number<\/a>&nbsp;of overdose deaths ever seen in the area. Out of the 1,019 deaths in 2022, a staggering 686 were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-morgues-overwhelmed-with-dead-bodies-due-to-fentanyl-overdoses\">attributed<\/a>&nbsp;to fentanyl. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-times-homeless-crisis\">Lawsuits filed in 2018<\/a>&nbsp;by Seattle and King County against major pharmaceutical companies revealed that a staggering 80% of the homeless population in the area suffer from substance abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being aware of this issue for years, local officials have unfortunately&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-morgues-overwhelmed-with-dead-bodies-due-to-fentanyl-overdoses\">contributed to its worsening<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-morgues-overwhelmed-with-dead-bodies-due-to-fentanyl-overdoses\">2022 legislative session<\/a>, state officials had the opportunity to tighten the possession law by adding the word &#8220;knowingly&#8221; to it, but instead, they made it a misdemeanor &#8211; a type of crime that is rarely enforced &#8211; effectively legalizing drug use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the billions of dollars invested by the city and county in homeless services and addiction&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-area-activists-expose-county-needle-exchanges-operating-in-vans-in-parking-lots\">harm reduction<\/a>, the homeless and drug crisis has only&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-morgues-overwhelmed-with-dead-bodies-due-to-fentanyl-overdoses\">escalated<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kingcounty.gov\/depts\/health\/overdose-prevention\/~\/media\/depts\/health\/medical-examiner\/documents\/2022-overdose-death-report.ashx\">King County&#8217;s November 2022 report<\/a>, 70% of all confirmed overdose deaths in the county involved fentanyl, regardless of the victim&#8217;s housing status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite distributing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-morgues-overwhelmed-with-dead-bodies-due-to-fentanyl-overdoses\">over 10,000<\/a>&nbsp;naloxone kits and 100,000 fentanyl test strips in 2022, Seattle and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/seattle-students-returning-to-in-person-learning-are-greeted-by-homeless-encampments-on-campus-school-official\">King County, Public Health<\/a>&nbsp;faced a rise in both the number of opioid overdoses and overdose deaths.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington decriminalized drug use and possession following a ruling by the state Supreme Court that declared the state&#8217;s felony possession law unconstitutional in the landmark case known as the&nbsp;Blake Decision.
