On Saturday, the U.S. military shot down<\/a> a suspected Chinese spy balloon off the coast of Carolina after it flew over sensitive military sites in North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China claimed<\/a> the flyover was a mistake made by a civilian aircraft and warned of consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Joe Biden issued an order<\/a> to bring down the balloon, but he had initially wanted the operation to take place on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to U.S. officials<\/a>, he was advised that the most appropriate time for the operation would be when the balloon was over water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The military determined<\/a> that bringing the balloon down over land from an altitude of 60,000 feet would present a significant threat to people on the ground, making it an unjustifiable risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China issued a threat<\/a> in response, saying that it reserved the right to \u201ctake further actions\u201d and criticized the U.S. for \u201can obvious overreaction and a serious violation of international practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/a> in China stated on Sunday<\/a> that \u201cChina will resolutely uphold the relevant company\u2019s legitimate rights and interests, and at the same time reserving the right to take further actions in response.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the military shooting down the spy balloon, many Republicans criticized<\/a> President Biden’s response, asking why it took him so long to order the U.S. military to bring down the balloon and whether he was compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAllowing a spy balloon from China to travel across the entire continental United States before contesting its presence is a disastrous projection of weakness by the White House,\u201d said<\/a> Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., tweeted<\/a>: \u201cNow that this embarrassing episode is over, we need answers from the Biden Administration on the decision-making process. China was allowed to violate American sovereignty unimpeded for days.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Television footage<\/a> captured a minor explosion, after which the massive balloon plummeted toward the water, resembling a cascading ribbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bill Swanson, who observed the deflation of the balloon from his residence in Myrtle Beach, stated<\/a> that the deflation was swift as fighter jets orbited the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
